- Where is Southland Computer located?
Our shop is located at 128 Southland Drive Suite 50 in Lexington, Kentucky. Our door faces Rebel Road. Rebel Road is the very first street on the left coming from Nicholasville Road. We are less than 5 minutes from University of Kentucky.
- What are your hours?
We are open Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. We are closed Saturdays and Sundays. We can make accommodations if you need after hours service.
- Do I need an appointment?
No, you do not need to have an appointment to drop off your computer for servicing. You can drop off your computer Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. You can start your support request by completing our online Support Form.
- Is all computer work done in-house?
Yes, all our computer repair is completed in house. We do not send your computer anywhere else to be repaired. Only our trained and experienced technicians will complete work on your machine.
- Do you provide computer services to businesses?
Yes, we offer many of our services to both residential customers and businesses. We can be your IT department for your small business. Providing services from building custom computers, installing and configuring networking solutions, installing and setting up new hardware for use in your business to providing software support as needed.
- Do you carry parts in-store?
We carry some commonly used hardware in our shop. Because we want to provide our customers with the best price they can get, we order parts as needed. This allows for us to pass savings to our customers.
- Do you sell wall mounts?
Yes, we carry wall mounts. Shopping for wall mounts at big box stores can be expensive. We are able to sell those wall mounts at a discounted price because we can buy them in bulk and pass the savings to you, our customers.
- What forms of payment does Southland Computer accept?
We accept cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay, Android Pay and for pre-approved accounts NET 30. We only accept checks previously approved by Southland Computer.
- What is your return policy?
All sales are final. Manufacturer’s warranty is available on all hardware.
- How much does it cost to get a computer diagnosis?
Our diagnostic service is $15. The Diagnostic Fee is deducted from price of repair.
- What do I need to bring with me?
If your computer is a notebook, be sure to bring your power cord. Power cords for notebooks can vary between manufacturers. If your computer is a desktop, just bring the tower, the power cords for desktops tend to be the same across manufacturers.
- What type of computers do you repair?
We repair all computers. Windows PC and Apple Macs.
- Do you do screen replacements on notebooks?
Yes, we can replace your notebook screen. The cost is parts plus labor. Screen prices can vary. Depends on availability and manufacturer. Typically screens replacement start at about $50 and go upwards depending on manufacturer. After you bring your notebook in for diagnosis, we will be able to provide you a better quote for the part and service. You can get started by completing our online Support Request form.
- Do you replace touch screens on notebooks?
Depends on the notebook, we complete these repairs on a case by case basis. To find out if we can replace your touch screen, give us a call or complete our Support Form.
- Do you replace screens on smartphones?
Currently, we do not do servicing on smartphones. We are looking at adding this service. But there are other small businesses in the area who are specializing in phone screen replacements. We can provide you with recommendations.
- Do you build custom computers?
Yes. We can build a computer system to meet your needs. By having us build you a computer, we can target hardware to reach the maximum impact of the purpose of your computer. Learn more by visiting our Custom Build page.
- Do you make house calls?
es! We will be happy to make house calls. Having someone visit your home to assess situations with networking or WiFi can save you tons of headaches.
- Do you offer pick-up service?
Yes, we can pick-up your computer and bring it back after servicing your machine. Call our shop to schedule a pick-up - (859) 363-6349. Our pick-up service is available within Lexington city limits.
- Do you repair Xbox, Playstation, Wii or other game consoles?
No, we do not repair game consoles.
- Do you offer an express service?
Yes. We offer an express service. All computer repairs are completed in the order they are received. Whenever your machine goes down, we know that you need to be back up and running as quickly as possible. If your machine is “Business Critical” we will move your machine ahead of the line. This service does carry an extra charge.
- Do you repair printers?
As a general rule, we do not repair printers. We can diagnose a problem and give you our diagnosis and recommendation. Always check your printer’s manufacturer’s warranty, it may be serviceable by the manufacturer.
- Can you install hard drives?
Yes, we can install hard drives for you. If your hard drive is failing, we can replace the hard drive and transfer your old data to the new hard drive.
- Do you remove computer viruses?
Yes of course! We use three (3) independent tools to ensure there are no virus’ left on your computer. All of our virus removals include installation of Avast, an excellent free virus protection software. We use it on all of our computers and recommend it to all our customers.
- Should I use the email provided by my ISP (Internet Service Provider)?
No, you should not use the email provided for free by your Internet Service Provider(ISP).
- If you change who provides your internet service, your email has to change.
- If your ISP is sold to another company, you will receive a new email address.
- Most of the ISPs out there have not updated their email protocol. It's outdated and limited.
- What anti-virus software do you recommend?
We recommend AVAST. Excellent free anti-virus internet security software. We install AVAST on any computer we service for Virus Removal. AVAST provides additional services at a cost. We trust AVAST and recommend it to everyone.
- I have Windows XP, should I upgrade?
Yes. In most cases, completely replacing the XP machine is the best option. You should have stopped using an XP machine years ago! XP machines stopped getting security updates back in April 2014. For that reason alone, you should stop using an XP machine. Most XP machines do not have the hardware required for modern Microsoft Windows operating system.
- Is it cheaper to repair my computer or buy a new computer?
We can complete a diagnosis of your computer and let you know our recommendation. Sometimes, a computer has reached the end of it’s lifecycle and/or is beyond economic repair (BER). We want to make technology work for you and your budget.
- What is PUP?
PUP stands for Potentially Unwanted Programs. These typically are programs that we inadvertently install when installing that free game, free software, or accepting a free offer online. PUP is usually installed by the end user intentionally or not but you ultimately gave it permission to be installed on your system.
- What is malware?
Malware is malicious code or software installed without your permission. Malware’s sole purpose is to cause harm to your computer, your data and your information. Unlike PUP, you do not need to install a program to have malware on your computer.
- What is spyware?
Spyware is malware that spies on your computer activities. Spyware typically gathers and reports how you are using your computer, what websites you are visiting, who you are interacting with, what you are using your computer for and more. Spyware is one of the most dangerous malicious code because it can specifically target users for their personal identifiable information and their assets.
